We report the results of a geochemical study of sediment and trap material. Major and trace elements (Zr, Ba, rare earth elements, and Th) were analyzed on bulk sedimentary material collected along the NE Atlantic margin. Our aim is to test the widespread use of Ba-barite as a proxy for paleoproductivity in a continental margin area. This environment is of great interest because atmospheric-oceanic exchanges are important. In sediments, the geochemical signatures remain close to an upper crust reference, with flat shale-normalized rare earth elements patterns and constant elementary ratios. The calculated biogenic fraction of Ba or excess Ba (20-45%) remains lower than the excess Ba record in trap material (80-99%). The evolution of the geochemical... |

Belgium's Maritime Zone of Interest (BMZI), including the Belgian Territorial Sea, Belgian Continental Shelf, and Bonn Agreement Zone of Multilateral Responsibility, were regularly surveyed by remote-sensing aircraft for the presence of operational oil spills between 1991 and 1995. Simultaneously wind speed and direction were recorded; wave height was obtained from the literature. In total, 228 spills of various sizes, volumes and origins were analysed by means of univariate statistical analysis. We documented that the observed oil spills were generally elongate, narrow and thin, that spill dimensions were interrelated, and that wind speed and wave height affected these dimensions. A major fraction of the total variation however could be attributed to... |

Since turbulence is an important factor for the growth of microscopic algae, the effect of mixing intensity and mixing time, has been assessed by means of air-lift pumps as an alternative technology for the agitation of algal cultures. Batch culture experiments in enriched sea water were carried out indoors with Chlorella in 100 liter tanks and outdoors with natural phytoplankton populations in 70 m³ tanks. The respective culturing depths in these tanks were 25 and 180 cm. The role of the mixing was also evaluated against that of the pH regulation of the cultures. Mixing with air-lift pumps increased the algal growth rate significantly in comparison to non-agitated cultures. The yields were also much higher (up to 30%) in mixed than in... |

A new family Cristacoxidae is proposed to accommodate the monotypic genera Cristacoxa gen. nov., Noodtorthopsyllus Lang (ex Canthocamptidae) and Cubanocleta Petkovski (ex Laophontidae). Cristacoxa petkovskii gen. et spec. nov. is described on the basis of a single male collected from coralline sand of Bonaire, West Indies. N. psammophilus Noodt and C. noodti Petkovski are redescribed and refigured on the basis of new material from the Galapagos (Isla Santa Cruz), the West Indian Islands (Curaçao, Klein Curaçao, Bonaire) and the Canary Islands (El Hierro, Tenerife). The new family is characterised by the presence of an outer spinous process on the first antennular segment, the absence of the antennary exopod, the uniramous mandibular palp, the presence of... |

A standardized method was developed for artificially infecting the European eel with Anguillicola crassus, a parasitical swim bladder nematode. For this purpose, an intermediate host, Paracyclops fimbriatus, and a paratenic host, Cyprinus carpio, were used. Parasite prevalence in the artificially infected eels was very high, although there was a large variation in the number of worms per eel. Compared to other methods of artificial infection described in the literature, this method appears to be more efficient ad reliable; there were also more infectious larvae that were recovered and the mortality rate of eels under treatment was lower. |

1. A simple cylindrical hatching and separator box is described for Artemia salinanauplii (and other phototactic invertebrates), in which the "corner seeking effect" responsible for poor separation is avoided, and from which nauplii can be recovered very conveniently. 2. Separation is achieved by partly unscrewing an internal and closed cylinder from its fixed counter-part glued to the bottom of the box, till two slits are freed through which the nauplii migrate from the darkened internal hatching cylinder into the illuminated exterior compartment. Rescrewing the former cylinder separates the larvae from debris and unhatched eggs. |

A multimetric fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) was composed to assess the biotic integrity of Flandrian water bodies. As fish communities differ substantially between standing waters, running waters of the bream zone and running waters of the barbel zone, eight candidate metrics for each of these water types or zones were identified, representing three major classes of biological attributes. These are species richness and composition, fish condition and abundance, trophic composition. The metrics were tested and modified where needed. The IBI was applied throughout Flanders on 104 locations in standing waters, 500 locations in waters of the bream zone and 257 locations in waters of the barbel zone. Standing waters scored substantially different from... |

Automatization in the food distribution is necessary for the controlled culturing of filter feeders in high densities. Numerous devices have been described to distribute specific quantities of food suspension at preset time intervals (cf. review in Kinne, 1977). The number of systems which, however, add food whenever a preset critical turbidity of the medium is exceeded are rather limited. They furthermore are either very expensive (sophisticated equipment) or have to be cleaned very often (cf. review in Sorgeloos et al., 1976). We tried to simplify the technological complexity of the existing systems and developed an inexpensive, automatic, self cleaning food distributor. This apparatus measures the turbidity of the culturing medium which is pumped into a... |
